Frequently Asked Questions
When will I hear from my child’s coach?
Please allow a few weeks for CYBA to assign a coach after registration closes. Since all coaches are volunteers, the time to hear from your coach may be affected, especially if we do not have any volunteers.
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REC AND TRAVEL BASKETBALL?
CYBA provides an opportunity for 4th to 6th grade players to try out to participate in competitive travel basketball. Attendance at tryouts is mandatory for making the traveling team. If your child isn't interested in the travel team, there's no need to try out for basketball. When registration opens, you can sign up your child for the non-travel option.
The travel teams are suitable for players with advanced basketball skills who are prepared to compete at higher levels. Playing time for travel teams may not be equal. Coaches try to make playing time as fair as possible, often deciding based on score differential, practice attendance, attitude, and effort.
Consider these factors when deciding if your child is ready to try out for the traveling team. Travel teams typically play in 6-8 weekend tournaments. Although named "Travel," it doesn't mean that the team will be going to the metro area every weekend. The CYBA aims to host a tournament for each grade level. In addition, our travel teams have often played tournaments in Esko, Proctor, Hermantown, Duluth, Northwestern, Solon Springs, Siren, etc.
Some teams choose to participate in the Minnesota Grade State Tournament at the end of the year in the Twin Cities area.
Rec basketball teams strive for as much equal playing time as possible, focusing on fun and skill development. Teams can expect to play 6 or 7 Saturdays, with games as far north as Two Harbors and as far south as Hinckley. Expect to play games in Esko, Fond du Lac, Cromwell, Barnum, Proctor, South Ridge, Wrenshall, etc.
IS A JERSEY REQUIRED TO PLAY?
The CYBA offers jerseys for $30 during the registration process. It is encouraged for all players to purchase a jersey. You do not need to purchase a jersey every year, as CYBA tries to keep the style fairly similar from year to year. If your child makes the travel team, the travel team coach will handle ordering a jersey for your child. The jersey cost is included in the registration fee for travel team players only.
WHY ARE THERE REGISTRATION DEADLINES?
Registration is not guaranteed after the deadline. CYBA reserves the right to deny late registrations, with no exceptions. Planning the season involves ordering jerseys, assigning volunteer coaches, forming teams, and scheduling tournaments. Late registrations, if accepted, will incur a $25 fee.
DOES CYBA OFFER FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE?
CYBA is committed to making basketball accessible to all children. If your family is in need of support with registration costs, please email cloquethoops@gmail.com to request assistance. We’ll review your request and get back to you as soon as possible.
